The purpose of life in Kitzeh is the care and nurture placed on the lives of children. Russia officially has around 700,000 ‘social orphans’. The community helps children without families adapt to life and to overcome their trauma and pain. It does so by providing a therapeutic environment in which the children are taught to listen to themselves and share encouraged to explore. Through the reflective awareness of the reality of everday activity, the adults too have a chance to develop further. After all, it is often in helping others that we can begin to help ourselves.
The community holds regular ‘awareness’ meetings to enable the children to share and talk about what they have learnt and come to understand. In addition, these meetings help strengthen the community and create a sense of appreciation and recognition. Now, with the support of the Ecologia Youth Trust, Kitezh is expanding its work and enabling international volunteers to visit the community and spend up to 3 months experiencing and supporting the work done.
