‘We believe in our capacity as women to beautify the world. It comes naturally to us – as women, we are givers and caretakers of life. We touch those we meet and come together to share, heal our wounds and support each other in our work for the world’.
River of Life is a project by women for women, and offers the opportunity for women around the world to express their solidarity with each other, especially for women who have more resources on the material level, to share with women with less material resources, and who are doing crucial work in their communities and in the networks of GEN.
River of Life offers retreats to deepen the sharing and foster healing, restoration and to empower, inspire and replenish women in order to continue and strengthen their groundbreaking work. These are spaces to share important skills and knowledge, and women can then act as multipliers to bring this back to their communities.

The ‘River of Life’ first emerged in 2013 during the Women for Women Ecovillage Design Education at Umphakatsi Peace Village, South Africa. As the women sat by the Umphakatsi River, a joint vision emerged seemingly from the flowing waters: the inspiration to found a network of support between women, linking North and South in fruitful dialogue and exchange. The River of Life Project was born to weave webs of kindness and trust for women’s empowerment, bringing sweet hope to places of harshness.
The Global Ecovillage Network has astounding women leaders and elders at the forefront of entwining recognition of indigenous wisdom and cutting edge ecovillage strategies for sustainable change in diverse settings. Key figures in rights movements, poverty reduction, climate change issues, social justice and working with some of the most marginalised peoples. They are held together by an inspiring vision of weaving social, cultural, economic and ecological solutions for a hopeful future.
