Global Campus Palestine (GCP) provides Palestinians with the opportunity to study regenerative ecological practices, as a first step towards establishing decentralized, autonomous models of how human beings can live sustainably.
CGP has worked on the Taneeb family farm, Hakoritna (https://ecovillage.org/project/hakoritna-farm/) in the city of Tulkarm, from 2013-15. Hakoritna was the host and venue for educational and network meetings, and continues to serve as a demonstration site for Permaculture food production and sustainable solutions (raised-bed horticulture; solar food drying; biogas energy production; local seed collection; and aquaponics).
Since 2015 the CGP has been active in Farkha (https://ecovillage.org/project/farkha/), a traditional hilltop village in the Salfit district. Local leaders have been encouraging autonomy and sustainability for many years through rooftop rainwater harvesting, organic home gardens, and chemical-free agriculture. Farkha hosted the first Ecovillage Design Education in Palestine in 2015/16, and was recognized by GEN as the first Palestinian Ecovillage. The demonstration site has been further developed with a combination of traditional stone terracing and swales for rainwater retention, mixed-culture permaculture, composting toilet and a small biogas digestor.
Farkha hosts an International Youth Volunteer Festival. CGP hosted a camp with a team of knowledge carriers from Tamera community (ecology, wild life management) to further develop the 2hectare organic agriculture and agro-forestry demonstration site.
CGP has been building a network of partners with the aim of establishing GEN Palestine, which will be the foundation to establish GEN Sham, a network within the countries of the Levant.
The political situation in Palestine doesn’t allow easy connection among people who strive for survival. We see it as a great responsibility to use our freedom and ability to connect people, to support the emergence of a strong regional network.
