What we do

We hold a vision for a living-learning community that can help plant the seeds for a sustainable human society. We would like to gather a group of teachers, healers, artists, activists, & communitarians to develop this alternative society. We envision a “school of the human” where people can come to learn all the things they need to be truly human, and which they wouldn’t learn in school.
We see an intact village, where the teachers live together with their families and other loved ones, and where the public is invited in for instruction across a broad range. This learning would range from an afternoon class or weekend retreat, to multi-year immersion while living in the village itself. The curriculum could start simply, but would eventually cover all fundamental aspects of human life, which we’ve divided into six realms: sacred arts, social ecology arts, land ecology arts, nature connection arts, healing arts, and creative arts.
This school would not just be a place to learn information, but a chrysalis that allows people to fundamentally transform within it. As a school, it must be a blueprint for a new model of human learning; one that allows for learning at the mental level, as well as the emotional, physical, spiritual, and social levels. It will be a model for a new kind of village, in which both the needs of the group and the needs of the individual are held in equal regard.
We see the community itself as a living laboratory. Here we can experiment with new models of relating and governing. These include application of developed structures such as dynamic governance, restorative justice, and polyamory, as well as experimentation to hone those structures or find new expressions. This experimentation also extends to legal & financial arrangements around property & income sharing, as well as to green technology, permaculture, and homesteading techniques to live in harmony with the natural world.

How to join

At this point, we’re only open to hearing from potential co-founders. We’re in the process of building a collective vision, developing a structure, and seeking land. If you would like to help build this vision with us, please get in touch. We’d love to know about your previous experience either founding or living in community. If it’s none, that may be ok — we need a mix of experienced people and those with a fresh perspective. We would like to know whatever relevant experience you have, and what you feel you bring to the table.
We’re specifically looking for stakeholders to hold down four of our learning aspects: land ecology arts, nature connection arts, healing arts, and creative arts. If you have a background in one of these areas, we’d love to talk to you. If not, but you still feel your experience and aptitude make you a good fit for the project, please do get in touch.
We don’t have land or a location yet. We know we would like to be somewhere in the western half of the U.S. We also know we need significant acreage, with the ability to grow abundant food, and we would like to be within an hour of a major international airport. Right now, our focus is on building our core team, and letting the land call to us once we’ve coalesced around a vision.

La Dimensión Social del Diseño Regenerativo

Are you looking to consciously re-invent cooperative and harmonious ways of living and working together? If so, how do we design solutions for group development, leadership, conflict resolution, decision-making, creativity, social justice and communication? Join Gaia Education’s Social Design for Sustainability course and learn practical effective ways to create the change we all seek. Our distinct programme is your chance to learn about the different ways to participate in this (r)evolutionary shift in paradigms. Our aim is to give you a better understanding of the true meaning of social equity and participatory action, and to enable participants to apply transformative tools that align us with more resilient social systems. Our relationship with others is too dear to let it default to old domineering paradigms. Many of us feel that our current social system is no longer sustainable and that more compassionate and just ways of organising are possible, but what are the alternatives? It is a commonly held belief that there are things individuals can do to change the system or improve their social condition but within the context of a complex global community, the effectiveness of isolated individual action is limited. We all co-create the system in which we live so once we join with others and work for a shared vision to improve the situation in our communities we participate in a powerful force for positive change If you have been part of a group, you already know that one of the most common reasons for failure of group projects is conflict. Conflict is a structural issue in the formation of groups so propagating successful group projects will necessarily entail a healing process in which we step out of the cycles of pain and violence that have run through human history and take responsibility for initiating new patterns. Permaculture Design Course

In this program you will learn how to plan, create and nurture regenerative human settlements. You will gain new perspectives and understandings as well as a variety of tools for how we as human beings can become caretakers for the whole ecosystem; how we can create abundant and diverse community systems, gardens and landscapes by connecting to and understanding ourselves, our communities and our land in deeper ways. By learning to observe the patterns of life and its energy flows and cycles, by learning to work with them instead of against them, you will emerge with a complex skillset to bring about regenerative creative solutions in your life. This unique course brings Permaculture Design together with the indigenous cultural wisdom gathered by the international Nature Connection and Regenerative Culture movement and its networks, creating a cultural container that supports you on a journey into yourself, your community and the world around you. You will be immersed in this culture throughout the program as well as learn how to facilitate it in your own personal and professional context at home. This course will be a powerful, transformative community experience, enabled by a deep immersion into nature, music, and the presence of cultural visionaries and elders, all hosted in an evolving ecovillage in the magnificent mountains of the Swiss Alps.
