Bodhi Vanam—“Awakening Forest”—is a non-profit, non-religious conscious living and ecological community project within an organic mountain farm near Perumalmalai, Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, South India.
Surrounded by forest, streams and rich biodiversity, it offers a simple setting where inner growth and care for the Earth meet in everyday life. Meditation, yoga, conscious relating and creative exploration sit alongside gardening, preparing nourishing vegetarian meals and tending shared spaces.
We welcome people to stay and practise, participate in guided retreats, volunteer, share skills and co-create meaningful gatherings. Both personal and guided practices offer opportunities to slow down, listen inwardly and learn through experience.
Bodhi Vanam is an evolving experiment in living with awareness, compassion and ecological responsibility. Inspired by permaculture and the wisdom of nature, we seek to deepen our care for the land while learning how to live respectfully together.
Here, planting a tree, listening to another person and sitting in silence are all part of the same invitation: to nurture life within and around us.
A flourishing forest and a conscious community, growing together.
We envision a place where biodiversity thrives, people deepen in compassion and inner freedom, and everyday life reflects a respectful relationship with the Earth. May the understanding gained here travel beyond the forest, inspiring more caring and regenerative ways of living.
To bring this vision into daily practice by caring for the forest and organic farm, offering personal and guided practices, and creating opportunities for shared learning, retreats and meaningful service.
Through mindful use of resources, community participation and honest, compassionate relationships, we connect inner development with practical care for people and nature.
A board, council, or committee chosen by members makes decisions on behalf of the community.
Everyone must agree before moving forward.
Power and responsibility are shared relatively equally among members.
We approach conflict as an opportunity to deepen understanding and learn how to live together with greater awareness and care.
Our intention is to address tensions early through honest, respectful dialogue. Each person is encouraged to pause, listen without interruption, speak from their own experience, and express needs without blame or assumptions.
When direct conversation feels difficult, those involved may invite a mutually trusted facilitator to support the dialogue. Together, we seek practical agreements that respect individual boundaries and the well-being of the community, with time to revisit how those agreements are working.
We value accountability, repair and learning over punishment. Reconciliation is never forced; when safety or serious harm is involved, clear boundaries and appropriate outside support take priority.
Financial contributions based on individual ability to pay, with varying amounts according to income levels.
Bodhi Vanam offers retreats, workshops and learning experiences that bring together inner exploration, conscious living and connection with nature.
Our offerings include yoga and meditation, breathwork and embodied awareness, conscious relating, personal growth, wellness and rejuvenation retreats, and facilitator trainings. We also welcome visiting teachers, artists and practitioners to co-create gatherings aligned with the spirit of the space.
Through our Sādhana stays, visitors can combine personal practice with guided sessions, alongside time for silence, reflection, creativity and rest.
Learning also unfolds through everyday participation: organic gardening, caring for the land, preparing nourishing food and contributing to community life.
Offerings vary with the season and visiting facilitators. We invite interested participants to contact us about upcoming programmes and the guidance available during their stay.
