What we do

Solferino en la actualidad es un pueblo de 1800 habitantes, ubicado en la zona norte del Municipio de Lázaro Cárdenas en el estado de Quintana Roo, su historia nace como una zona azucarera de la ex hacienda “Lab Kah” (Pueblo viejo), hoy Solferino monte bravo y San Eusebio. En la antigüedad se le dió el nombre a la zona maya como Yum Balam, que en maya significa Señor Jaguar, cuenta con un clima cálido húmedo, zona de manglar, humedales, selvas bajas y medianas. Es hogar de una biodiversidad única entre flora y fauna. En Solferino se han ido localizando diferentes tipos de vegetación, como por ejemplo, las selvas medianas, que abarcan árboles de chicle, ramón, cedro y chaca, tintales, que son selvas bajas en donde abunda el palo de tinte, es el hogar de varias especies de felinos silvestres tropicales, como el jaguar, el puma, el ocelote, el margay (pequeño tigrillo) y el jaguarundi o gato de selva. Solferino es un pueblo muy antiguo, donde en el año 1670 se empezaron a crear los primeros asentamientos humanos, en la época de la colonización española de México, cuando grupos afrodescendientes empezaron a migrar para la explotación de palo de tinte, especie endémica de la zona, por su color rojizo calizo y que poco a poco sus habitantes empezaron a sembrar y cultivar alimentos como el maíz, el frijol, calabaza, también dedicaron gran parte de su tiempo a la cacería y pesca para abastecerse de alimentos. Con el “Porfiriato” (1876-1910), es cuando la tierra se entregaba en concesión a empresas agrícolas, constituyéndose de esta manera grandes latifundios como la Compañía Agrícola, que ocupaba una extensión gigantesca de terreno en el noreste de la Península.

GEN AFRICA Conference 2016

GEN Africa in partnership with GEN international will hold the upcoming Conference at Ghana Permaculture Institute (GPI) in Techiman from December 1 – 6, 2016. 35 active leaders and advisors of the network will meet in order to consolidate the work we have done so far and plan the way forward. The conference will include the General Assembly. The conference aims at achieving the following objectives: Celebrate official registration of GEN Africa Strengthen GEN Africa, review the strategy and plan next steps Meet as a General Assembly: reporting on activities and finances for 2014/2015, re-elect new members into the Council etc. Re-examine how we function as a council and as a GEN Region Develop functional partnerships Evaluate targets for 2016, identify targets for 2017 and align with GEN International targets. Identify more people in the network to support with specific tasks (i.e. fundraising and website management) Finalizing memberships Networking and sharing within the Region Are you inspired by this movement or are you already implementing Ecovillage programs in your country? Then you don’t want to miss this opportunity. Unfortunately we are not able to bring everyone to this conference by way of funding and venue capacity, but you are welcome to let us know if you could fund your own costs to be able to join us all.
