What we do

Our History: In 1990 eighteen social pioneers initiated a community on Playa Litibu in Nayarit, Mexico, two kilometers from the village of Higuera Blanca. In the first thirty years, we built eight eco-friendly casas that had solar energy, natural black/gray water systems from cisterns, and internet. In the common areas, we created stone pathways, composting stations, a peace garden, food forest, and a community gathering place with cob benches, fire pit, and oven under swaying palms by the ocean.
Our Vision is to be a replicable living model of multi-generation and multi-cultural regenerative living in a permaculture environment that becomes increasingly self-sufficient and self-reliant. The framework is made up of the following:
Social Sustainability: We actively work to build trust, collaboration and openness to make sure people feel seen, heard and empowered. We provide a sense of belonging through community relationships, common projects, and shared goals. We strive to be a learning community to continue an evolutionary journey of growth and change and learning of facilitation, communication and peacebuilding skills.
Ecological Sustainability We live lightly on the Earth through sustainable practices in our common and private spaces. We engage actively in partnering with the natural gifts of sun, water, and food that surround us by demonstrating a low-impact lifestyle that cares for these resources. The community thrives when eating, celebrating, working and other forms of creative expression are done together. We aim to integrate humans with nature in ways that increase biodiversity, regenerate ecosystems, and give people a chance to experience their interdependence with systems and cycles of life daily. We live a high quality of life in the midst of moving towards 100% renewable energies, ensuring our water catchment supplies our year-round needs, organic agriculture supports the growth of our food/soil, and ‘waste’ is treated as a valuable resource.

How to join

PLEASE READ BEFORE REQUESTING A VISIT
The Litibu EcoVillage (LEV) is happy to schedule a 90-minute site-visit with anyone who is interested to see our community and to discuss our approach to sustainable living. However, it’s important to confirm a specific time for such visits to ensure that a member is available to host the site visit.
LEV does not have a “work exchange” program nor available space for casual guests seeking short-term residency.
LEV does have limited openings for persons interested in joining an existing EcoVillage. However, LEV is only seeking potential members who are intending to live full time in Mexico and who are aligned with our values and vision. To this end, LEV has a carefully designed “membership journey process” to enable a good fit between current members and potential new members. The best place to begin such a conversation is a day-trip site-visit as described above.
The legal structure of LEV is a “Limited Liability Company” (LLC) and joining LEV involves a transfer of an available membership. All property at LEV is jointly held by the LLC. Members of the LLC have designated plots where homes have already been built and membership transfers include guardianship of an existing house associated with a particular membership. Only one plot is still available for new construction and that is reserved for Mexican nationals. The cost of obtaining a membership is substantial and reflects something similar to the original financial investment made by community founders. For those who remain interested in learning more about becoming an LEV member, a list of FAQ is available. To receive a copy of these, please send a request with a self-introduction about yourself that includes a statement about your interests and intentions.
