About me

Owner and Manager Julian Lauzzana is a father, chef, teacher, media producer, community organizer, events coordinator and steward of the land. Julian lives at Earthen Heart with his partner Palma and five children in the main house. Julian has worked in the media since 1992 and has eight years experience as a professional chef. Currently he is focusing on building the value added food line with products like garlic powder, fruit leather and fruit juices. The vast majority of food is consumed at the homestead with some items being sold under the Cottage Food Laws of Michigan and various entrepreneurial undertakings begun.

Earthen Heart is a 20 acre community homestead in Southwest Michigan that is being transformed into a low impact community using permaculture principles.

Earthen Heart is an 20 acre vortex in Southwest Michigan created in order to present a model appropriate to this area which has libertarian and homesteading roots and is balanced between Caucasian, Mexican and African American population. In essence Earthen Heart is a re-learning center for those interested in reclaiming our roots in nature and collective ways. Since 2005, many have come (from Siberia to Australia) and participated in countless ways. We welcome short stays from a few days to 3 weeks after which longer stays can be considered. Blueberry harvest comes in August which is a great time to come. We accept people year round and hope to build a core group of 10-20 residents to keep the homestead active and thriving. For visitors there are outbuildings, campgrounds, a pop-up trailer, and hopefully soon some earthen buildings on the property.

Gaia Ashram Internship

The Pioneers of Gaia Ashram , 5th of July– 2nd of August 2015 The Gaia Ashram Internship is a one month program on Ecovillage Design, Permaculture and Deep Ecology. The internship will be a holistic participatory learning experience & process. Interns will experience being part of the Gaia Ashram Community and we will live together for one month at– Gaia Ashram-. At Gaia Ashram we belief in holistic learning that balances the head, hands & heart. Gaia Ashram encourages participatory learning & values the power of community in holding the learning space. We design the daily & weekly structure of the internship and of our lives here based on these values and principles. Theoretical learning (Head) The theoretical sessions will be participatory and interactive. It will cover the 4 keys of Ecovillage Design Education (Social, Economical, Ecological and Worldview inspired by Gaia Education). Each week will cover one of the Ecovillage Design Keys and integrated into this we will be introduced to Permaculture Design & Deep Ecology in terms of philosophy, movement and personal experiences. Overall, We will have a maximum of 2-3 hours of theory per day on the session days, to also create lots of space for practical experiential learning. See more details of the key content below. Practical learning (Hands – on) For the hands – on practical learning we will be developing the Gaia Ashram’s farm and restoring nature on the Gaia Ashram land using permaculture strategies & techniques that are appropriate for the Rainy Season & the land and its local context. The hands-on work will focus on Gardening work i.e. developing the vegetable gardens, planting seeds & seedlings, transplanting, propagation of plants, making composts, growing and maintaining a Food Forest, planting green manures, planting lots of trees, planting seasonal crops. Sociocracy Leadership Training

SoLT is an innovative way of learning sociocracy. Think of it as an immersion program in a ‘pop-up’ organization. SoFA provides the framework for that organization. That way, people interested in sociocracy can join SoLT and learn by doing what sociocracy feels like. Imagine you wanted to learn rowing – and then you attend a workshop where you never sit in a boat. This is different in SoLT. We provide boats for people so they can learn and do and practice at the same time. We’re right next to you for every step, while you grow more and more confident and skilled.
