We are honoured to have as guest speakers experienced community members: Albert Bates (the Farm) and Christoph Strünke (Sieben Linden) and an academic researcher, Chelsea Schelly ( Professor of Sociology at Michigan Technological University) to share their experiences and expertise around the topic. Chelsea Schelly is a Professor of Sociology in the Department of Social Sciences at Michigan Technological University. Her work explores how socio-technological systems shape the organization of social life and conceptions of human-nature relationships. She has researched and written about a wide array of alternative technologies and material systems that lessen the negative impacts of modern life, including renewable energy technology adoption and the policies that support it, living off grid, intentional communities, 3-D printing, and Rainbow Gatherings. Much of her recent work involves team science and community engagement.
Albert Bates has been a resident of The Farm since 1972, and co-founded the Ecovillage Network of the Americas and the Global Ecovillage Network. He is a retired public interest attorney and author of more than twenty books on energy, environment and history. Albert has been director of the Global Village Institute for Appropriate Technology since 1984 and of the Ecovillage Training Center at The Farm community since 1994.
Albert’s books Shutdown: Nuclear Power on Trial (1979) and Climate in Crisis (1990) provided early insight into two of the greatest dangers now confronting the world. In 1980 he shared the first Right Livelihood Award for his work with Plenty International in preserving indigenous cultures. He was a designer of concentrating photovoltaic arrays and solar-hybrid automobiles displayed at the 1982 World’s Fair. Most recent books: Burn: Igniting a New Carbon Drawdown Economy to End the Climate Crisis (2019), Taming Plastics (2020), The Dark Side of the Ocean (2020), and Making Waves (2021).
Christoph Strünke has been living and working in the Ecovillage Sieben Linden, in Germany, for 21 years. He studied cultural sciences in Lüneburg with a focus on ecology and environmental education. He is responsible for the ecological aspects of the ecovillage, including the calculation of the community ecological footprint. Sieben Linden is home for 140 people.
