About the Solutions

Overview

This abstract was taken from the Completion of course Dissertation submitted to the Federal University of Santa Catarina to obtain the degree of Bachelor and Bachelor of Science Biological, by Júlia Borém Sfredo in partnership with ÇaraKura Institute.

ABSTRACT

The implementation of constructed wetlands appears as a proposal interesting to help remedy one of the big health problems – environmental issues that is the increase in demand and the decreased supply of quality water. These systems simulate flooded areas plants and perform wastewater treatment.

In the present study, the efficiency of a wetland system built in spiral was verified,
containing three aquatic plant species floating: Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes and Spirodela intermedia in the gray water treatment of the kitchen sink, and the effluent was compared with the current legislation on the launch of effluents. Four collections of effluent samples were carried out between the months of June to December 2012, and analyzed the following physical-chemical and bacteriological parameters: OD, pH, total COD, total solids (ST), suspended solids (SS), inorganic nitrogen series, total phosphorus, total coliforms and Escherichia coli. The wetland presented an average COD removal efficiency of 94%, and ST and SS of 77% and 97%, respectively. The average DO concentration of the effluent treated was 5.93 mg / L. After the effluent passes through the system, the pH and concentrations of OD, COD and nitrogen are meet according to the legislation. Only concentrations of
phosphorus are above the values provided by law, even though it presents a removal efficiency of 90%. E. crassipes’ performance in the system was highlighted, especially in the warmer months when there was an increase in its biomass.

Keywords: Wetland, floating aquatic plants, gray water,
treatment, spiral.

The challenge

Quality water scarcity is an extremely serious issue nowadays, sanitation is based on drinking water which ends up being polluted and demands big efforts on purification through expensive treatment plants and chemical processes. Other biological treatment systems require a large piece of land which is not always available.
