About the Solutions

Overview

Most of the youths in Cameroon do not own land; therefore WEMAKIT farm provided a perfect opportunity for them to nurture their passion for agriculture by making available lands that they can cultivate on.

WEMAKIT farm owns lands in the northwest and southwest regions of Cameroon that are cultivated by youth who have enormous passion for agriculture and want to develop their footprints in this field. WEMAKIT farm provides capital and farm inputs for all its farms, but challenges its youth trainees to challenge themselves to learn the skills and sustainable farming techniques on the farms as they cultivate them. All WEMAKIT farm’s youth trainees are paid salaries and given support towards individual project work. Our model provides educational opportunities for youth to learn new farming techniques, explore the agricultural field and develop themselves into incumbents in the sector.

At WEMAKIT farm we value research, timeliness and maximising income. As a for profit venture, we take calculated steps and risks towards every cultivation that we involve in. We choose the crops to plant carefully, then we factor in the period, weather challenges and market analysis. We are bent on efficiency in our farm inputs and making profits from our harvests. Therefore, our decisions are well researched, experimented and carefully documented before implementation. WEMAKIT farm does a year-round cultivation (6-month rainy season and 6-month dry season cultivation) which guarantees availability of fresh farm produce throughout the year.

WEMAKIT farm intends to have a shift in the mindsets of the youth that we work with. We will open doors for employment and personal growth while boosting the agricultural sector in Cameroon. We take pride in leaving out footprint on the fight against climate change and we hope that our practice of climate-smart agriculture will ripple to other places and cause positive shifts. We believe that the works of WEMAKIT farm will go a long way to fight not only poverty and food insecurity, but it will also fight hunger, malnutrition, climate change and some other socio-economic setbacks in Cameroon.

The Result:
WEMAKIT has been able to harnessed the power of youth in agriculture, causing a shift in mindset of some communities towards sustainable agriculture. WEMAKIT has also sponsored some young people in their education and other agricultural projects which are environmentally friendly.
WEMAKIT uses the following matrics of measurements are;
Food production data. That is crop count and harvest count to see if harvest matches with the crop population.
Social data.
Goegraphic participation and participation based on the various tasks in our farms.
Reach of programs (number of communities and persons who turn out for our trainings and presentations.)
The mood and level of interaction amongst our workers tells us how satisfied they are with our services.
Economic data. That is mainly market sales” The main beneficiaries of WEMAKIT are the youth and they double as our customers by the services they render on our farms and projects.

The challenge

In Cameroon, Agriculture continues to play a key role in development. As we expect the population of the world to increase to 8.4 billion by 2030, we’re also thinking about how this population will be fed. The responsibility of ensuring food security for this population must be shared together with the young people.
