Description of Challenge
Community idea has been one of the most interest for sociological analysis. However, it still seems to be a bit confusing. Practically all social sciences define community as a way of organization that is repressive and that tries to homogenize all individuals within it. On the other hand, Sociology, with its concept of "organic solidarity", shows that (liberal) societies deeply respect individual freedom; thus, insinuating that community is primitive and obsolete.
The ecovillage is not a repressive community, on the contrary, there is a deep respect for the individual
Solution
The present study proposes that the research of the main organizational forms of ecovillages would allow delimiting the community concept, differentiating it from other ways of social organization (such as primitive communities which were indeed repressive).
A new way of understanding ecovillages -as “organic communities”- is proposed, highlighting this way, its modern character and the deep respect they have for individuality.
