Von 1986 bis 2012 sind in der Region Kassel 4 Gemeinschaften entstanden: die Kommune Niederkaufungen, die Villa Locomuna in Kassel, die gASTWERKe in Escherode und der Lossehof in Oberkaufungen. Alle Gruppen basieren auf den Grundsätzen Gemeinsame Ökonomie und Konsens bei der Entscheidungsfindung und sind Teil des KommuJa-Netzwerkes der politischen Kommunen.
