What we do

Nestled among the mountains of the Yarra Valley in Victoria, Australia, Anam Cara is a 50 acre farm that is home to a small group of radical humans living on the land, restoring connection with country, and working to heal both as individuals and as a collective back into right relationship with one another and with the natural world. Our inspiration and style of living draws from the wisdoms of the communities of the Findhorn Foundation, from our Celtic ancestors, from our Indigenous First People’s ancestors and from the living Earth herself. We are also deeply influenced by Vedic philosophy and the Yoga traditions.
Anam Cara is an Irish Gaelic phrase that loosely translates as “soul friend”. The Anam Cara relationship is one of sacred depth, and is founded in connection, authenticity, humility, trust and respect. Here at the homestead we seek to cultivate Anam Cara connections with one another, with our guests, and with all of the creatures, trees and rocks and non-human life that share this beautiful place with us.
Living life immersed in the Australian bush brings us close to the natural forces on a daily basis. We live consciously in rhythm with the cycles, the seasons, and the weather. We practice daily meditations, singing and rituals that restore and uphold our connection with Spirit. We live wide and deep expansive lives at Anam Cara!
Our vision for this community and the homestead is to live in as eco-friendly and sustainable way as is possible whilst co-creating, journeying, and remembering a more sustainable, harmonious, nourishing and sacred way of being human.
Anam Cara is a place of healing, growth, visioning and enacting our way out of the predicaments of Modernity. Anam Cara seeks to create a bridge between the old world and the new.

How to join

Anyone seeking residency needs to complete the four Anam Cara Experience Weeks as a prerequisite. This gives you a chance to see whether our lifestyle suits you, and also ensures that all residents have gone through a process of learning certain inter-relating skills by the time they become full residents. This is important because creating community in the modern world is hard! We all come with different agendas and perspectives as well as differing woundings and traumas. When these woundings intersect without skilful holding, heaven can very quickly become hell!
If you have arrived with us via work exchange and decide that you are interested in residency, you would still need to book in for the Experience Weeks at some point in your stay. We also require you to complete our Conscious Relating Retreat. If your long-term guest-ship and temporary residency applications are successful, all of these undertakings can be spread out throughout both of these periods to diffuse the costs.
There are three stages to residency, and in order to begin the residency process, you will need to have stayed with us for a 12 week period – either as an Anam Cara Experience Week guest, a volunteer, or a combination of both. At the end of this period, you will be invited to speak with each existing resident individually, followed by what we call First Attunement.

Introductorio Dragon Dreaming

Transformational Communities of Tomorrow - free live stream

Join Ken Wilber and Doshin Roshi via live streaming, as they honour the gifts of the transformational eco-communities of today, recognise some of the challenges they are currently facing and explore what the medicine to heal and evolve could be from an Integral perspective. Sign up here to join the free live stream. Ken Wilber and Doshin Roshi Honouring the role communities have played in the transformation of the world up until now – the movement from modernity to postmodernity. Highlighting the pain and struggles within these organisations – beliefs, values and preferences that contribute to a sense of ‘stuckness’. Creating curiosity about the medicine needed to support a breakthrough to the next level – what might communities of tomorrow look like once they have embodied this medicine? Sharing inspiration and support to expand the potential of each community – deepening the transformational impulse around the world. Join in as this event will be streamed live to communities, holistic centres and ecovillages around the world. The transformational and eco communities of today grew out of the 1960s era that has been called postmodern—the gifts of multiculturalism, diversity, inclusion, sensitivity, eco awareness. Some of the struggles include co-creating healthy hierarchies, effective decision making, attracting younger people, financial sustainability. Ken Wilber outlines the significance of this rare dialogue offered as a free live broadcast to post modern communities around the world, one that focuses on growing up, waking up, cleaning up and showing up: “The postmodern communities of transformation, including Findhorn, did two profoundly important things: in relative truth, they introduced an enchanted world instead of the disenchanted wasteland; and in ultimate Truth, they simpl

Introduction to Permaculture

Beyond agriculture or architecture, but borrowing from both, permaculture is a comprehensive design tool that can be used to better own communities, gardens, and lives. By mimicking nature to heal broken systems (both ecological and social) permaculture provides a variety of approaches for positive change. In this introductory weekend, Graham Calder of P3 Permaculture will walk participants through the basics of permaculture philosophy and design. This introductory weekend is designed to equip participants with the confidence and ability to identify and overcome the design problems that surround us. The first day of the course will focus on the history, ethics, and principles of permaculture, as well as provide an introduction to its design methods. We will then use permaculture to explore solutions to the challenges we face in our homes and communities. Examples of permaculture projects from around the world will provide useful case studies. On day two we will put theory into practice: together we will go through the steps of implementing a permaculture design, from observation to the generation of appropriate design strategies. The Deanery Project is a rural learning centre and demonstration site that provides hands-on learning and skill sharing opportunities designed to strengthen community and protect the environment. Through learning about such topics as forest management, alternative energy, natural building, food sovereignty, healthy living, as well as the arts, we can improve the health of our land, waters, natural resources and communities for sustainable social and economic gain. Born out of the desire to support local values and a traditional resource-use economy, The Deanery Project evolved as a natural response to a need to protect the social fabric of the community by saving an old summer camp from private development. The project now continues to reconfigure itself in interesting ways. We have diverse partnerships with schools, all levels
