Malartic EcoVillage Innovation Hub

About me

The Malartic EcoVillage Innovation Hub is an innovative and community-driven initiative that will transform an existing old building in Malartic, Rodrigues, into a vibrant centre for environmental education, community empowerment, and sustainable development. Implemented by the Rodrigues Environment Friendly Group (REFG), the project is inspired by the principles of the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) and demonstrates how local communities can build regenerative, resilient, and inclusive villages.
The hub will serve as a demonstration and learning centre where residents, schools, community organisations, women, youth, and vulnerable groups can access practical training and participate in activities that promote environmental conservation, biodiversity restoration, circular economy practices, climate resilience, sustainable agriculture, waste reduction, and renewable resource management. It will showcase practical solutions such as recycling, composting, rainwater harvesting, native tree nurseries, community gardens, and eco-friendly technologies that can be replicated throughout Rodrigues.
Beyond environmental action, the project will address social challenges by providing a safe and inclusive community space for youth leadership, anti-drug awareness, life-skills development, volunteerism, and community dialogue. It will strengthen the capacity of local organisations through training in governance, project management, leadership, and resource mobilisation while promoting collaboration between government institutions, schools, the private sector, and civil society.
By refurbishing an underutilised building into a multifunctional EcoVillage Innovation Hub, the project will create a lasting community asset that supports sustainable livelihoods, strengthens social cohesion, promotes environmental stewardship, and encourages active citizen participation. The hub will become a model of regenerative development for Rodrigues, demonstrating how communities can work together to protect natural resources, preserve cultural heritage, improve wellbeing, and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
