Kakuma is the second-poorest area in Kenya, situated in the Turkana County of the northwestern region of the country. The Kakuma Refugee Camp is located 120 kilometres from the Lodwar District Headquarters and 95 kilometres from the Lokichoggio Kenya-Sudan border.
Population: The Kakuma Refugee Camp serves refugees who have been forcibly displaced from their home countries due to war or persecution. It was established in 1992 to host Sudanese refugees, and has since expanded to take in refugees from Somalia, Ethiopia, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Uganda, Rwanda,Tanzania. According to current UNHCR statistics, the camp population stands at close to 200,000 refugees.
Environment Life in the semi-arid desert environment of Kakuma is rather challenging. The area has always been full of problems: dust storms, high temperatures, poisonous spiders, snakes, and scorpions, outbreaks of malaria, cholera, and other hardships. The average daytime temperature is 40 degrees Celsius, or 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
Economy: Due to their legal situation and local environmental conditions, many refugees are largely unable to support themselves with income-generating activities.
We works toward building a better model that promotes creativity and provides residents with the means to improve their situation, deal with complex challenges, and break the cycle of poverty, both for refugees and for our host community.
