In 2012, UK NGO Islamic Help set up the Children’s Eco Village in the Mkuranga District of Tanzania, 40km south of Dar es Salaam. The village is a ground-breaking initiative designed to promote environmental sustainability and provide a stable and loving home for orphaned and vulnerable girls. It provides a safe, supportive, and healing natural environment for the girls who live there, whilst modelling a sustainable way of living through the on-site permaculture farm, eco-mosque, and specialised eco home design.
Although the project continues to be funded by Islamic Help, local people live, work at, and run the project. Everyone’s voices and opinions are shared, and we are working to develop the project based around what the girls who live there want to see. We are currently in the early stages of building a school on site, which will educate girls from the local area, as well as the girls who live at the village.
Our vision is:
To create a family orientated village for orphan children, promoting a professional and learning ethos inspired by environmental and sustainability practices, and to become a centre of innovation and renewable technology, all based on the principles of the Quran & Sunnah.
Upcoming Projects:
As well as continuing to build the core elements of our Eco Village, we hope to undertake 3 major projects over the next 3 years, which we are currently seeking funding for.
These are:
Retrofit of 4 homes that have fallen into desrepair into naturally cooling buildings
Building a new primary school that will teach via a hands-on, environmentally focused curriculum
Create an upcycling cooperative run by local women turning Waste into Wealth
