Ecovillage Youth Exchange Project Launched

Ecovillage Youth Exchange Connecting youth and communities across continents This year five young people from Senegal and five young people from Germany will have the chance to share their knowledge about ecology and social justice while diving into each other’s cultures thanks to a collaborative project between GEN Africa and GEN Europe. The project envisions an exchange for young adults involved in the ecovillage movements in Africa and Europe, where we explore steps towards healing and reconciliation between and within the two continents. We will focus on youth empowerment through skill-building and exchange of knowledge around ecological living, education, and project development, working towards a regenerative and community-oriented future. In July-August 2022, a group of Senegalese youth will be welcomed into an ecovillage in Germany, then in November-December, the German participants will travel to either GuĂ©dĂ© Chantier or Bambey Serere ecovillage in Senegal. During the exchange, the participants will explore the core question of how young adults in the ecovillage movement can empower and support each other in their activism for change while exploring steps towards healing and reconciliation between the African and European continents. The group will be accompanied by group leaders, and the process will be supported by trainers, facilitators, and a team of support volunteers. The outcome of the exchange will be guided by the participants’ skills, interests, and experiences – but it could result in new exchange projects, an exhibition, a film, or a theatre piece. If you, or a young person you know, is committed to the project’s core themes of ecology and community, racial and social justice, and youth empowerment, apply for this experience today! Applicants should be between the ages of 18 and 30 and resident of either Germany or Senegal. App

Build a small wind turbine course

“Build a small wind turbine” construction course July 24th to August 2nd, 2015 A ten day live-in course in Nea Makri, Greece Learn how to build a small wind turbine and put yourself on the road to self-reliance Organized by Nea Guinea Small wind turbines ‘Nea Guinea’ has been organizing small wind turbine construction workshops since 2009 and has empowered many people with the knowledge of harnessing power from the wind. The wind turbines built in the workshops are based on the designs of Hugh Piggott, a renewable energy expert living in the off-grid community of Scoraig (Scotland), as described in his ‘Wind Turbine Recipe Book’. These wind turbines can be constructed with the use of common materials, simple manufacturing techniques and basic tools, providing a low cost small wind turbine that anyone can built. Hundreds of homemade small wind turbines have been constructed worldwide using these designs, and have proven to be robust, efficient, easy to maintain and quick to repair. Typical applications of locally manufactured small wind turbines are development projects such as electrification of village communities in the global south, educational projects in universities and schools and sustainability projects such as renewable energy electrification of eco-villages. Course outline During this one week course a 600W small wind turbine with 2.4m rotor diameter will be constructed from scratch, using simple raw materials like wood for the blades, steel for the mounting frame and tail, copper wire for the coils and neodymium magnets cast in resin for the generator. The wind turbine will be the product of enthusiastic team work, as we will work in groups focusing on woodworking, metalworking and generator fabrication, along with short breaks to share what we have learned with the whole team. Woodworking will involve hand curving the blades of the rotor using drawknives and spokeshaves, planes and chisels. Metalworking will involve fabri
