What we do

In 2000 five friends purchased land near the coastal village of Haga Haga in the Eastern Cape. The land is about 8 km from the sea (with beautiful deserted beaches) and is just under 300 hectares of rolling ‘bush veld’ with lush greenbelts, bordered on by the Quko River. Geographically it is situated on the southern cusp of the sub-tropical climate region which allows for extensively diverse and year-round cultivation. From 2000 to 2003 the land rarely had more than two people living on it full-time. Then in 2003 two more committed pioneers arrived and the vision started to take shape… Up until 2008 we were still only 4 resident members with a regular flow of visitors and volunteers. In that time, with few hands and very little finance we managed to secure our water supply with a solar pump, we established a small garden, set up two bee hives, we built an outdoor compost toilet and eventually got to building three of our own natural dwellings. In 2007 an article about KD and the Global Ecovillage Movement was published in Biophile magazine. At the same time we had some much needed repair work done on our road. These two events, along with our resounding intention, created an energetic gateway for others to come and join us on our endeavour. 2008 was a pivotal year for us with people contacting us from many different countries with a wish to come and visit and possibly join. In 2009 we were seven resident members with two 4 year-old children, a toddler and a baby.

Social Media Intern for GEN International Hours: Up to 20/month, flexible around your schedule and availability Location: Remote, work with Eva Goldfarb Focus: Instagram + LinkedIn (TikTok if you’re into it!) Hi! I’m Eva, and I run social media for GEN International — the global network connecting ecovillages, intentional communities, and regenerative culture-builders across every continent. I’m looking for a co-conspirator to help me tell the stories of the people quietly building the future: off-grid villages in the Philippines, permaculture farms in Senegal, urban cohousing projects in Berlin, elders passing down land wisdom in the Andes. It’s a wildly rich, wildly underrepresented world, and I want more people to fall in love with it the way I have. What you’ll actually do: Dream up and create content for Instagram and LinkedIn (reels, carousels, stories, captions that don’t sound like a corporate newsletter) Dig into our global network and turn your findings into stories people want to share Pitch your own ideas. If there’s a series, a theme, a format, or a corner of the network that lights you up, that’s what I want you to focus on. What we’re looking for: A natural storyteller, someone who can spot the human thread in a project update or a photo from a faraway village Genuinely curious about ecovillages, sustainability, intentional community, regenerative living Self-motivated and communicative; this is a flexible, trust-based role Why this role: This isn’t a “post 3x a week and don’t ask questions” internship. You’ll have real creative freedom to work on what excites you, learn how a global grassroots network tells its story, and build a portfolio full of meaningful, purpose-driven content. Plus you’ll be talking to people living some of the most interesting, intentional lives on the planet. If storytelling for a better world sounds like your kind of fun, let’s talk.

Natural Building Workshop

Come study the art and practice of natural finishes. Learn how to utilize breathable, low impact, non-toxic materials to make protective, beautiful and durable finishes. In this in-depth hands-on workshop you will be applying earthen plaster to the interior and exterior of a Tiny Home, the Cedar Nest, at Wilson Creek Gardens. The Project The Cedar Nest is an on going project that started in 2013 utilizing 95% repurposed materials from a 1920’s home and from the land at WCG. The structure is designed to demonstrate simple construction techniques in a small footprint, 11’x16’. It was in-filled with a straw clay slip last year and now is ready for the walls to receive the final plaster layer. We will be utilizing mostly on-site materials. What You Will Learn: • Sourcing and processing materials for making your own healthy, low cost finishes! • Proper methods for natural ingredients when preparing and applying clay based plaster. • Practice making and applying other types of finishes which can be applied to other surfaces such as; cement, bricks, drywall and latex paint. • The many advantages of constructing a tiny home with ecologically friendly building techniques. Who will benefit from this workshop? Builders, homesteaders, homeowners, interior decorators and artists enjoy being able to make and apply these healthy finishes successfully to both interior and exterior walls. Class cost: Three-day: $320.00 Includes: meals and camping: $20.00 Early bird discount (if register by 6/24) Daily rate: $ 110.00 Includes lunch. Location: Wilson Creek Gardens (http://cascadiapermaculture.com) Class will be held on the site of a 7-acre homestead and permaculture demonstration site located outside Cottage Grove, Oregon Registration: Contact je************@***il.com Instructor Eva Edleson is a talented natural builder, cook, gardener, and craftswoman.
