What we do

Emerald Earth Sanctuary is a 31-year-old intentional community in rural Mendocino County. We have 189 acres of redwoods and oak woodland. The land is held in trust by a nonprofit corporation dedicated to sustainable living, simplicity, education, social and environmental justice, land stewardship, and reverence for the Earth and all living things. We have the infrastructure for 12 permanent residents plus guests, interns, and students. We use natural materials and our own labor to keep costs and environmental impact low. We are off grid, with solar and hydro-electricity, a cell phone, and satellite internet. We share meals, meet, and socialize in a common house.
Our current projects focus on creating a resilient community in the face of climate change. This includes expanding our greywater & rainwater catchment, preparing for prescribed burn for safety and forest health, and producing as much food as possible.
We are offering 2 internships this summer, for a minimum of 2 months from May 10 – July 10. However, interns are usually invited to stay longer.
Milling/Carpentry – Use wood from our land and build decks, platforms, etc., with a Lucas mill to create dimensional lumber. Restoration of other natural buildings may be included, as well as learning how to do many repairs. Also includes some forestry work, such as prescribed burns and utilizing goats for brush removal.
Animal Care/Garden – Help with milking goats, take them to pasture, learn to make milk products, and care for chickens. Garden work includes starting seeds, planting, weeding, harvesting, making effective compost and manure piles, pruning, preparing garden beds, gleaning from neighbor’s orchards, and checking irrigation.
