Rancho Delicioso is a living, breathing ecovillage on the wild Southern Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica, tucked into the hills a few kilometers from the Pacific. It began as a shared dream among a community of artists, musicians, yogis and permaculturists who wanted something more than a vacation project, and together they built it into something rare: roughly 70 lots where people actually live, not just visit.
That’s what sets us apart. We aren’t a rental village dressed up as an ecovillage. Families raise their children here. Retirees plant orchards here. People fall in love with this land and never leave. You’ll find bamboo and cob houses, aircrete domes, a four story treehouse grown into living bamboo, rainwater catchment, greywater systems, compost toilets and solar power woven into daily life, not as showpieces but as how we actually live.
At the heart of it all is a working organic farm growing over 100 edible plants, feeding our own kitchens and Wonderland, our farm to table restaurant and gathering space. We compost fiercely, experiment with aquaponics, restore depleted soil, and grow bamboo for building and beauty. Nothing here goes to waste if we can help it.
We teach what we learn. Our Awaken Retreat Center welcomes people from around the world for permaculture certification courses, yoga retreats and surf camps, and many of today’s residents first arrived as students and simply never went home. Through our Green Wave nonprofit, we support the local school and the region’s only wildlife rescue center, whose reintroduction program filled our trees with scarlet macaws again.
We gather often: movie nights, potlucks, festivals, free fitness classes on the yoga deck. This is a community still being built by hand, year after year, by people who chose this land on purpose and are pouring their lives into it together.
