About the event

Gaia Education promotes a holistic systems approach to education for sustainable development by:

  • developing curricula to empower change makers with inner and outer skills to redesign human presence in a sustainable world.
  • facilitating the delivery of transformative learning programmes in response to emerging needs
  • disseminating grass-roots wisdom through learning communities.

Gaia Education’s Design for Sustainability curriculum integrates the social, ecological, economic and worldview dimensions of sustainability, providing an education which is universal in scope and local in application.

Gaia Education offers state-of-the-art study guides, training manuals, books, webinars, presentations and a quarterly newsletter to facilitate the delivery of on-line and on-site transformational learning opportunities for community development.

Since 2006, Gaia Education has successfully supported the delivery of more than 190 programmes in 34 countries over 6 continents, reaching thousands of people. Its programmes have been offered in settings ranging from tribal women and traditional communities to children and youth, ecovillages, urban slums, universities and resilience training centers.

Gaia Education works in partnership with global educators, government and nongovernment agencies, ecovillages, universities, and the United Nations to bring sustainable development solutions to communities and ecosystems everywhere.

Gaia Education’s flagship curriculum is an official contribution to the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.

Sierra del Segura, 2004

Todas las ecoaldeas españolas, portuguesas y europeas fueron convocadas para estar presentes en este nuevo encuentro ibérico. Y así como faltaron a la cita portavoces de algunos de los proyectos españoles más importantes, esta vez sí acudieron representantes del movimiento alternativo portugués, que ofrecieron organizar en su país el siguiente encuentro. Y por primera vez, la RIE financió la asistencia de un representante español al encuentro anual del GEN – Europa (Red Global de Ecoaldeas Europea), celebrado en una comunidad alemana con 13 años de existencia, cuyas conclusiones fueron expuestas en Jaén. En el sur, los habitantes de los pueblos de Montalvo, La Parrilla y La Ballestera, lugar donde se convocaba la cita, no sabían qué podía suceder ante esta nueva reunión anual de la Red Ibérica de Ecoaldeas. Su lema “Sin saber que era imposible, fue y lo hizo”; y así se encontraron los componentes de la Asociación Cultural Amigos de Nuestras Tradiciones La Esparteña, organizadores del evento, que se venían reuniendo durante un año para coordinarse y preparar el encuentro, esfuerzo que culminó en una semana de febril actividad para montar la infraestructura que acogería a 300 personas. Era la tercera vez en siete años que la convocatoria se llevaba al sur de España, esta vez en un precioso valle dentro del protegido Parque Natural de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas, con tres aldeas habitadas y otra abandonada. Consiguieron un permiso especial para preparar allí el encuentro y una subvención de la Junta de Andalucía que agilizó la organización y ayudó a sufragar los gastos de infraestructura, así como la impresión de camisetas y carpetas con el logotipo elegido, un hongo de árbol seco que dibujaron con cara sonriente.
