Daruma is a permaculture designed educational Ecovillage that facilitates life-long learning activities.
Designed from the outset with permaculture principles in mind, the intention behind Daruma is to be a lifelong learning centre. There is no particular spiritual doctrine. Respect for others, old & young, and a natural curiosity & desire to learn seem to be common to all who visit here.
Everything on-site can and is used for educational purposes, as are resources in the local community, local market and other centres of education such as Rajamangala University.
As well as providing permaculture courses in Thailand, the school, ‘Mosaic Learning Centre’ now has over 60 full-time students and is continually growing.
Mosaic Learning Center is, in all likelihood, the world’s first alternative grade school with a curriculum designed using permaculture principles and ethics.
Although the Mosaic program makes use of the Thai national curriculum as a base, learning is arranged with two principal hallmarks very different from traditional education pedagogy:
First, students are not arranged by ‘grades’ and they do not attend traditional ‘classes’ such as history. Rather the arrangement of students is varied by age and ability as well as by individual interest.
Second, the flow of the study is according to the Mosaic Learning Journey which is a four part process involving discovery, exploration, investigation and mapping.
In addition to the Eco Farm and Mosaic School, we regularly have visitors, with over 800 volunteers, students, interns & apprentices from all over the world having worked and lived at Daruma.
