The M.L Jallow Ecovillage Project in The Gambia is a transformative initiative focused on promoting sustainability, environmental consciousness, and community engagement. Established by Momodou Barrow in 2019, Named M.L Jallow in honour of her late indigenous mother (Lalla Jallow) the project embodies the motto “Think Globally, Act Locally,” emphasizing the importance of local actions in addressing global environmental challenges. The core mission of the ecovillage is centered on a Rural Urban Tree Planting Initiative, where volunteers and community members actively participate in planting a diverse range of trees to combat climate change and enhance ecological integrity
The project not only aims to improve the local environment but also enhances the quality of life for the community by fostering economic security through sustainable eco-tourism practices. This includes initiatives such as waste management and renewable energy utilization, which are designed to minimize negative environmental impacts while maximizing local economic benefits
Additionally, the M.L Jallow Ecovillage Project seeks to empower the local population by promoting volunteerism and engaging community members—especially women and youth—in meaningful activities that enhance their skills and knowledge about sustainable practices
By aligning its objectives with the principles of global biodiversity and local empowerment, the project serves as a model for sustainable community development in The Gambia.
M.L Jallow Ecovillage has successfully implemented various programs, including large-scale tree-planting initiatives to combat deforestation, sustainable livelihood programs empowering women and youth through climate-smart agriculture, and waste management initiatives promoting circular economy practices. Additionally, we have been at the forefront of climate change education and advocacy, conducting training programs and community engagement activities to enhance resilience and awareness.
