Founded in 1993 on the ethics of care for the nature that surrounds it, Kuthumba encompasses a vision of a healthy lifestyle and the opportunity for people to co-create an environment that allows each individual to harbour a sense of peace and growth. Homes at Kuthumba are built using green principles, and the community hopes to serve as a model for how others can contribute to the protection of the environment and foster environmental wisdom.
More recently an influx of community-minded members has seen an increasing cohesion among the people on the land, looking at ways to live together in a more connected manner. Those living permanently at Kuthumba have a diverse range of passions, which include spiritual exploration and personal growth, permaculture, self-directed education, ‘alternative’ health and a form of eco-tourism that is educational.
Since 2020, more than half a dozen families have moved to Kuthumba, bringing a new focus on raising the next generation in a regenerative manner. A forest circle has been initiated as well as a playgroup for the younger children, known as The Nest. In 2022, an initiative to create a self-directed learning centre that connects us to the broader community in the area was started.
Kuthumba is located in a rural area just beyond the town of Plettenberg Bay, South Africa, and is surrounded by indigenous forest. The ecovillage is uniquely positioned with direct access to the Tsitsikamma National Park, which offers one of the area’s most stunning walking routes.
