One Island is an organic farm-based education center that embraces core eco-village principles and our facility serves as a community commons for other like-minded eco-farms in our immediate area. Since Hawaii does not allow multi-residential dwellings on agricultural land, we are developing a distributed eco-village model in Honaunau, at the heart of the Kona coffee belt, on the West coast of the big island of Hawaii.
We grow a diversity of organic fruits and vegetables, breed butterflies and host a pollinator habitat. In addition, we have native and canoe plant gardens, demonstrate and use renewable energy (we are 90% off grid) and host education programmes on sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, arts and culture, and health and wellness. Throughout the work we do, we incorporate the four cornerstones of sustainable living. We also fostering green business incubation and local economic development / coop programmes.
As the work of the community has progressed, we have become more focused on social change initiatives that ecnourage the adoption of sustainable living values and practices, and on a wiser use of human and natural resources.
