ArtActivism, streetArt and socially engaged Art with street children in the Democratic Republic of Kongo.
Principle of social sculpture: Rise awareness through participatory processes
Contribute to support, education and integration of street children in Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
More than 30 000 children are living on the streets of Kinshasa in rather difficult conditions: Most of them were rejected by their family and the society. They’re children who are categorized in their families for reasons such as poverty, baleful possession, separation or family injustice, decease of the father or of the mother. The only possibilities to survive are often stealing, begging, doing small jobs or prostitution. They don’t have the opportunity to go to school, they are not to consider, and this is why they lost hope for the future. It creates some lack of confidence and love for oneself. However, they contain capacities, qualities and dreams within themselves. In artistic expression, beauty is for us a deep interpretation of the sense of life: We are enthusiastic for beauty and beauty is enthusiastic for us because we carry her in us.
Roughly translated from the Congolese
national language, Lingala, “Oyo” directs a
person’s attention to “this one, over there”.
It is as if to accentuate something or
someone who has not been noticed or
perceived before. ‘Oyo’ will give a voice to
those who are often overlooked and
overheard. Using art as a platform the
children will be able to fully express
themselves and bring awareness to their
situation.The therapeutic structures of the
art project is strengthening the children’s
self-confidence and helps to reintegrate an
emotional balance to the many who have
faced serious trauma in their lives. The
group work encourages a solidarity and
peaceful energy that is rarely seen. The
joyful and playful atmosphere of the
project, combined with the attentiveness
and expression required by the process of
creating the art ,is in strong contrast with
the children’s everyday life full of violence,
fear and hopelessness.
In artistic expression, beauty is for us a deep interpretation of the sense of life:
We are enthusiastic for beauty
and beauty is enthusiastic for us
because we carry her in us.
Every artistic work is a mirror of emotions, feelings and internal processes; that’s why our plan promises a deep understanding of the children. We can participate in the mind of the child and make it visible for theirselves and others.
As ArtActivists we do not want that our art passes only in museums but that it is an active part of a change.
