Description of Challenge
The challenge is to get women's handcrafts, like the one's from the Beduin community in Sinai in Egypt, into the local, regional, and international markets, supporting them by selling the products and giving the women 75% of the profit. This way, women will be able to produce their handcrafts and will be able to market and sell them through the internet .Women living in developing areas, especially those living in traditional indigenous areas, are often highly experienced in a variety of handcraft skills. Despite their talents, it is very difficult for them to sell their products, in order for them to have a better living and support their families.
Solution
This is a way of creating a sustainable community where women can create their own living and generate income for the whole community. An example of such a project is beduincraft.com, where local crafts are produced and sold. Examples of what is produced are TENTS & TRADITIONAL WEAVING.
The tent is usually full of woven and beaded decoration, all designed by highly creative women.
The unique embroidery, beading and weaving work of the Bedouin women was once strongly embedded in everyday life. Designs, motifs and the materials used reflected their nomadic desert life. Typically, the handicraft would be passed down through the generations from mother to daughter. Females would gather together not only for the functional process, but also as a social event.
It is not uncommon for one woman to pick up the work of another and continue where she left off. In this way, skills and techniques were freely shared among the whole tribe. Nowadays, most of these handicrafts are designed to generate an income and supply tourists with special mementos from this area. BedouinCrafts.com would like to refresh old traditions and incorporate them into more modern and functional items, which will not only keep the women of the Sinai region financially independent, but allow them even in these modern times, to continue teaching newer generations special techniques of yesteryear.
