Description of Challenge
To impulse and encourage change in a short time and in a participatory way that involves a great
diversity of people in an enjoyable way.
“Human beings do not manage to live without cultivating any beauty. Our attentive gaze and the
time we dedicate to look for beauties will allow this connection”. Rodrigo Rubido Alonso (Instituto
Elos)
Solution
It is a methodology designed by Elos Institute in Brazil in 2003 and invites communities from all
over the world to design and cooperatively build ambitious projects according to the needs of
residents – such as a public square, a park or a day care center. It is a game played from 6 to 10
days and it entails 7 principles and stages expressed in the image.
The belief is that a community can work together in a cooperative, imaginative and rapid way to
build, in two days, a modern oasis: a physical space that promotes life, joy and restoration.
An Oasis Game…
∙ Stimulates entrepreneurship and cooperation in groups and communities;
∙ Promotes an appreciative gaze and broadens the capacity of each person to propose creative
solutions for critical questions pertaining to the community of the neighborhood;
∙ Brings a daily change of perception to participants that it is possible to change the world without
suffering; without compromising its liberty and autonomy and do it in a pleasant way.
∙ Promotes the practice of human values such as: respect, cooperation, acceptance of differences
∙ Broadens the level of information about environmental sustainability strategies and construction;
