Description of Challenge
In some places, when there is no electricity, the candle is indispensable. However, candles offered in the market are often made of non/sustainable palm oil, which mostly encourages deforestation and land conflicts. In places where there is no (permanent) power supply, people often use petroleum lamps or non-rechargeable short life batteries. Aluminium recycling in many counties is not yet working and as such the material is a heavy environmental pollutant.
Solution
Aluminium cans waste is a free resource. Kids, women or even disabled people can create some decorative candles with them through upcycling. During a workshop we can discuss with the participants about the environmental and social problems caused by bauxite (aluminium) mining, industrial palm oil production and waste. To this effect, it can be used with (old cooking) vegetable oil thus showing that we care about nature. For a more potent effect, adding essential oil can also help against mosquitoes. It greatly helps in reducing waste in our environment and creating beauty; but above all, it saves money and or generates income.
