The eco-community project is part of the Kalamos and Kastos sustainable development project run by the non-governmental organization Terra Sylvestris based in Kalamos island.
The objective of the project is to catalyze environmental preservation in the islands by reclaiming sites that cannot be reclaimed by nature through rewilding by transforming them through permaculture and at the same time providing for income-generating alternatives to environmentally destructive practices in the surrounding area. An important part of the project is reclaiming lost traditional ecological knowledge, seeds and cultivation techniques and applying them in a modern context.
People from the already existing communities of the villages of the island along with people from all over the world compose the eco-community initiative.
For its purpose, the project also utilizes existing structures in the villages such as old houses, storerooms and similar types of structures as well as new ones.
