Keuruu Ecovillage is an international community located in the heart of Finland. It was founded by the group of eco-spirited people in 1997.
Currently we have 30 adults and 10 children living here. On the larger scale we have approximately 150 supporting members who live outside but regurlarly visit us and receive our newsletter. Both us and supporting members are connected by the will to live in harmony with the nature and themselves.
Ecovillage consists of 54 hectares of land of which 24 is biologically cultivated and the rest is naturally preserved forest. We have about 30 different buildings located by the beautiful Kivijärvi-lake. The oldest buildings date back to the beginning of 18th century and represent a typical example of Finnish countryside and farming. The newer buildings like the community centre and dormitory, were built afterwards for various communal uses for which the farm was used before it became an ecovillage.
Our aims are:
-To maintain nature and the traditional Finnish landscape
-To be self-sufficient in terms of foodcare and energy
-To support and develop natural forestry, ecological building and permaculture
-To use and explore sustainable energy forms (wood, solar, wind) and recycling
-To support various artistic and spiritual activities within the community
In the end we hope to be a human settlement which is sustainable, ecologically, economically, culturally and spiritually.
When visiting us you can:
-Do traditional farm work in the garden, farm, with animals, maintenance, kitchen and in the forest
-Collect herbs, berries, mushrooms, do cross-country trekking
-Learn traditional Finnish handworks and arts, such as spinning, weaving, felting, woodwork, pottery and music
