Global Permayouth Project – Australia, GENOA
The Permayouth Project is based in Crystal Waters Ecovillage in Australia, as part of GEN Oceania & Asia. The Global Permyouth connects young people aged between 11-16 around the world – from Europe, Asia, Americas, Africa, Oceania and youth in refugee camps too. They gather together via zoom to explore what permaculture means in their local context, to learn about different ways of thinking about it and applying it.
This group is led by young people for young people, with Mentors from around the world too – Morag Gamble, Rosemary Morrow, Hannah Apricot Eckberg, Sierra Robinson, Charlie McGee, Fritjof Capra, Nora Bateson and many more to come.
They also organize a weekly newsletter, a monthly online festival, local camps, a youtube channel, and raise funds for the Permayouth clubs in refugee camps and villages. So far this year, around 1.000 young refugees across 10 camps and villages have received free permaculture training led by local teachers, and they have also been able to support the donation of tool and seed kits to start gardens, and/or seed-funding for local enterprises.

Boekel Ecovillage – Netherlands, GEN Europe
Boekel Ecovillage is a Dutch-based project that acts as a Living Lab, a real-life test and experimentation environment for a sustainable future. The 47 members of the ecovillage are users and producers, co-creating innovation and fostering user-driven open innovation. Founded in 2016, they have built a self-supporting village when it comes to energy, water and a major part of their food.
Their lowtech innovative heat storage system is used to store summer heat into basalt and use that stored heat to warm their 36 houses for the rest of the year. This system is carbon free, uses 100% local energy and will result in zero energy costs to the ecovillagers. This system allows Boekel Ecovillage to balance out the top of energy production in the summer and energy demand in the winter! On July 1 2021, the Dutch Building sector awarded Boekel Ecovillage as the Most sustainable organisation of the Netherlands. Boekel Ecovillage also won the Public choice award.

Sonas Village – Cambodja, GENOA
Sonas Village is a sustainable community development In Cambodia. Their first eco-village community was developed in the Takeo province of Cambodia. They have been applying the holistic eco-village model since 2013.
Since the start of the Covid -19 in Cambodia, they have been put to the toughest test of all for sustainable living. The livelihood of millions across Cambodia depends on tourism which was crippled within weeks of the outbreak. This created a huge pull for new ideas that can help people to survive financially.
In this period, Sonas Village has started seven new projects in different parts of Cambodia, growing from 55 families to 250 families across 5 villages. They have also started working with the indigenous communities in Mondulkiri province to preserve their culture and create a sustainable living for the forest communities.

Musu Runakuna Indigenous Community – Colombia, CASA Latina
In March 2017, the river that crosses Mocoa, south of Colombia, produced a landslide of water, mood, rocks and debris, razing 40% of Mocoa’s neighbourhoods, affecting more than 2300 families and killing +1000 people, including the settlement of the Musurrunakuna indigenous community
The Colombian government began the process to grant 69 Hectares for the reconstruction of the Musu Runakuna territory. The land used to be dedicated to livestock and therefore it has damaged soil. In the same year, Musu Runakuna families moved to the land, at first to live in a temporary communitarian camp. Joining forces, Musu Runakuna Cabildo and CASA Latina Chapter Colombia are working on the sustainable reconstruction of the community’s settlement.
The Participatory Reconstruction of the Musurrunakuna Territory in Colombia responds to the urge of rebuilding the people’s territory focusing on the 5 elements of the Musurrunakuna’s Life Plan: Territory (which includes environment and economy), Mother Tongue (specifically separated from culture), Health & Traditional Medicine, Social Organization (and Own Rights), Culture and Education.
At last, as of March 2021, the land is finally owned by the community:
“This generates a great positive impact for us and marks the beginning of the house construction project, because we were in suspense with this decision, because we did not know if we could continue here or if we should start another establishment process in a new property. The decision of the judges is that the land that is ours belongs to us. This shows unity and resilience are strong and living values in the Musu Runakuna community.”
Today there are 145 members in the community, including the ones living there permanently and those who have to commute to generate income. If the Musu Runakuna community receives the Hildur Jackson Award, they plan to invest the prize to strengthen income generation, improving their fish farming production. It already generates quality food for the community and for the local market, and their project is to achieve full food sovereignty with it.

Eco-Clean Ghana – GEN Africa
Eco-Clean Ghana Foundation is a Not for Profit organization that recycles waste into resources and creates entrepreneurial opportunities for the vulnerable in our society. It uses permaculture and ecovillage sustainable modules in turning waste into resources and creating livelihood empowerment opportunities. It empowers women and youth into generating income from plastic waste by turning these waste into school bags, laptop bags, and market bags. It also trains them on producing cleaning detergents (Liquid soap, shower gel, hand sanitizer, and bar soaps) for sale. Mushroom production training is also organized for these targets to produce and sell in the market to improve their livelihood.
Between 2020 and 2021, Eco-Clean Ghana was able to recycle over 1.5 tons of plastic waste. It has also recycled over 6 tons of degradable waste such as sawdust, rice bran and wheat bran into edible mushrooms. They have been able to directly organize livelihood empowerment training for over 76 youth and women. Eco-Clean Ghana also supported 3 local schools with 15 liters of cleaning detergents including liquid soap and hand sanitizers to mitigate and curb the spread of the COVID19 pandemic. Over 3000 people have benefitted from their products and radio advocacy programs made in 5 radio stations in our municipality.
Eco-Clean Ghana applied for the Hildur Jackson award to expand their sustainable projects and enable them to train even more women and youth who were hit hard in this COVID19 pandemic, with their livelihood skills development activities including Eco-bags production, Mushroom production and Cleaning Detergent Production.

Khetee Regenerative Agroforestry Farm – India, GENOA
Khetee Regenerative Agroforestry Farm, in the semi-arid zone of India, restores land from monoculture practices to regenerative agroforestry where they plant around 24 types of crops and plant all grown together. Inside the farm they have found ample impact in improving soil quality, soil water retaining capacity, natural biodiversity and changing the quality of yields which helps in carbon sequestration, groundwater level recharge and making the ecosystem sustainable.
Between 2020 and 2021, Khetee developed 2 acres of new Agroforestry farm in the village to best showcase the model and its benefits. Under their Agroforestry Fellowship program, 11 fellows (7 marginalised women, 4 male farmers) successfully completed their fellowship. They started their new batch with 30 fellows (22 marginalised women, and youth) to get trained in Agroforestry. Khetee was also able to reach out to remote and tribal areas of Bihar to distribute dry ration.
Khetee works for community development through regenerative Agroforestry. If they receive the Hildr Jackson Award funds, they plan to support 400 households of Durdih Village to undertake introduced Gharbadi cultivation in homestead land to produce and consume clean, green, safe and nutritious vegetables for round the year. Nutrition Garden is an age-old practice in India where the women used to grow vegetables and fruits according to their need in the homestead reusing grey water of the house.

Ayrumã Ecovillage – Brasil, CASA Latina
Ayrumã Ecovillage is a sustainable settlement of 42 members in Cerrado, the Brazilian Savannah. Its creation in 2012 has taken place through a circular governance process that counted on the participation of all our members and countless collaborators in constant learning and transformation. In its formative process, a permacultural planning was carried out aiming at the environmental regeneration and conservation of a large part of the land, where the native forest is home to great biodiversity, preserving waters and native species of the Cerrado biome, one of the most biodiverse regions of the world.
Ayrumã carries out numerous activities focused on the valorization and rescue of socio-cultural traditions, environmental research and education, sustainability, and agroecology.
In order to strengthen a broad support network, Ayrumã has been articulating joint actions among community associations, schools and universities, third sector entities, and public administration.
Besides keeping on protecting 134 hectares of land in the Cerrado (the Brazilian savannah) – an internationally recognized biodiversity hotspot – through fire prevention and conduction of natural regeneration, Ayrumã Ecovillage promoted several activities related to environmental education and solidarity economy.

Green Village Calauan – Philippines, GENOA
Since 2013, excluded young adults have participated in the creation and construction of Green Village Calauan in the Philippines. Beyond the incredible impact they bring to the development of their own country, they became the real actors of their own development : they learned to work as a team, to manage a budget, to hold meetings with professionals such as engineers or suppliers. Above all, they discover that they have the credibility, talents, skills to present to an employer with this rewarding experience that is well worth the diplomas.
2020 marked the end of the construction period, allowing the Green Village center to move to the second phase of the project: to become a Sustainable entrepreneurial hub. They were able to host an integration of all the Youth from the team in July before closing the center because of the lockdown.
From mid-2020 to 2021, the group has been able to maintain the place and step back and adapt their method LP4Y Green Village pedagogy 2.0 to become a 3-month residential training for young excluded women (18-24). The Youth develop and manage micro-businesses 5 days a week and thus develop soft, life and entrepreneurial skills. One day a week is dedicated to personal development. At the beginning of 2021, local coaches have been welcomed again on-site to prepare the ground for this new pedagogy and start recruiting new participants.

Pollyanna Rodrigues says

Permayouth is such a timely and transformational project!
Combining the potential of permaculture (landscape) design with the dynamic energy of youth and livelihood-building with refugee communities… that’s an amazingly smart set-up. While originated in Australia, I came across Permayouth recently through one of its Ugandan youth advocates Tom Olaam in Northern Uganda. Tom, 21 years-old, got into Permaculture thanks to a Permayouth scholarship and extended collaboration. He is an amazing human being and very passionate youth leader and farmer. He helped us to dynamise — or should I say permaculturise — our newly founded community supported agriculture Karecelo CSA Farm in Gulu. Thanks Tom & Permayouth!!
Eliene says
My favorite one is Ayrumã Ecovillage
Filitsa Korba says
My favourite one is Ecovillage Chitubu – Zimbabwe, GEN Africa
Looking around the world, I see with deep concern the fate of women. So it is important for me that they are focusing in female youths.
Additionally it touched me deep that these women are struggling to meet their daily dietary needs of the families, and the orphaned children that take care.
What kind of civilization is this if people need to struggle for food?
Please, support them
Please give young women a chance to have the control of their lives
Thank you
Nana Boadu says
I vote for eco-clean Ghana
Gaelle Muraca says
My favorite one is GREEN VILLAGE CALAUAN for the educational, community development and social impact it has beside the environmental actions. Also, it is duplicable.
The second on my wishlist is the Ecovillage Chitubu for the women and children impacts, very inspiring to have a whole community of women, mothers… and it works hand in hand with the local government, so looks like impactful.
Boekel Ecovillage is very inspiring but looks difficult to duplicate because very technical.
I also like Musu Runakuna Indigenous Community but I am not in favor of animal farming… so as the prize will be invest in fish farming… no.
Stacey English says
Global Permayouth Project – Australia, GENOA
I am in awe of the passion and commitment I have observed from this wonderful community of young adults and would love to give them my vote. It is a privilege to be able to connect with the members of Permayouth through their monthly festivals – I always feel inspired and hopeful that the next generation feel empowered to speak up and let their voices be heard, be that through connection to others, music, poetry or the sharing of their experiences. They speak to change, solutions and to their generation.
Maeve McBride says
I vote for Musu Runakuna.
Evelyn Zajdenwerg says
we are living here in Serro in a very danger moment with mining exploration trying to come and explore what will definitively finish with the water and the simple way of life. We need visibility. We need that the world see SERRO and help us to take care of this importante bioma, in a very delicate politic moment of destrution of nature in Brazil. Will be very important that ecovillage Ayrumã could make this project reality. Thank you very much for this oportunity.

amazing and critical projects! it’s really difficult to select only one. so, I would like all of them could be awarded somehow.
1. is there a way to provide resources to integrating them?
2. is there a way to develop a future great project (or projects) embracing their common goals? a network of them!
3. is there a way to catalize a contact among them? a workshop!
congratulations and good luck to all projects!
thanks to GEN!

The GREEN Village Calauan is an incredible hub for sustainability and innovation, putting the Youth in the center of the Change and empowering them as the real actor of their community. The revival after the pandemic is stunning and it is fantastic to see the former Youth of the program, hand in hand with the International catalyst, taking the lead to positively impact their community, involve them while promoting the local culture and eco system. Moreover, the ecological infrastuctures, again maintained by the Youth themselves, is a great example of a beautiful, green and peaceful environement to empower the Youth in a sustainable way !

Ayrumã – Extremely valuable initiative with social and environmental impact. I’m rooting for the project to be selected. The region needs a proposal like this to resist and be an alternative to mining. We are all Gaia.
Dorotea Barros Torres says
Ayrumã is a very important project for the preservation of the Serro and region. Mining is devastating the entire region and this project, the ecovillage, is one of the preservation areas.

My vote is for: Musu Runakuna Indigenous Community – Colombia
Having visited the area, I’ve come to understand the immense damage caused by the 2017 flood. Putumayo still needs to receive more help from the government. The indigenous communities, keepers of the jungle and its inhabitants would certainly do some good with the prize money.
Flávio Guimarães says

Meu voto vai pra Ecovila Ayrumã!
Meg McGowan says
I would like to vote for Permayouth. I love that this organisation is run by young people for young people. I also love the potential for what they are doing to transform refugee camps into ecovillages, wherever those camps might be. This is surely a living example of the permaculture principle of the greatest effect for the least change. I see how these young people are developing resilience, leadership and connection across the planet while also harnessing the power of creativity through music, poetry and art.
I also respect the way they are training teachers that live in the camps so that permaculture can be adapted to the local context by people that are already part of the community.
Kelly says
I would love to give my vote to the Global Permayouth Project. Such a wonderful group of bright, passionate young folk who are really making positive change in the world.

GREEN VILLAGE CALAUAN, for the actions it does and the impact it has on the community / environment is my favorite project. This kind of village looks really interesting and demonstrates a willingness for change. It allows to build a place working towards long term social and environmental stability.
Without any hesitation my second favorite project is the Ecovillage Chitubu, for its particular focus on women and children. The use of permaculture to achieve this social objective is particularly interesting.
Congratulations to all the projects for their social commitment, environmental protection, and creativity.

All the projects are doing a great job👍🌱 but my vote goes to Global permayouth project- Australia GENOA. Refugee communities live in adverse conditions. This project is really needed to empower such communities to become self-sufficient and resilient economically, socially, and ecologically. And the refugees themselves have shown positive growth in all aspects. Kudos Morag and team for great work that you are doing in refugee settlements.

[Eng] Ayrumã and Piracanga in Brazil are communities that are in great need of this award, each with its pressing needs, with great threats from projects with a very negative impact in their regions.
Brazil is experiencing a time of great political, economic, environmental, ethnic and cultural difficulties.
We are under attack by an inept, corrupt, belligerent government, acting like a worm eroding Brazilian democracy. Vibrating a lot for one of these two communities to be contemplated, if possible, the two, they deserve it!
Roberta Brangioni Fontes says
All projects are incredible and i hope they keep on growing, but my vote is for Ayrumã Ecovillage – Brasil, CASA Latina. The sustainable and educational projects they are developing are very important for the local traditional communities and the protection of nature, mainly in this moment, when the city is trying to resist to the entrance of mining companies in the region, that can prejudice water fountains and their traditional ways of living.

René says
My vote goes to Ecovillage Chitubu – Zimbabwe.
Transitioning into a society which fosters values for any life is hard in Zim. Especially when tribal core values are so deeply rooted in the societal system. More local initiatives are taken each year, to keep what is helpful and nurture a culture of change. Yet, to actually take steps on this new pathway, basic human needs need to be addressed first. Access to your own safe food and water and learning how to best tune into the ecosystem is paramount. From there anything is possible. Reading the review and website, over last years this initiative has demonstrated perseverance in working with “the system”, benefitting thousands of young people. To work through a global pandemic with female youths and their households shows the deep work Chibutu (flower bud) is committed to do.
Priya says
I would like to vote for Musu Runakuna Indigenous Community – Colombia, CASA Latina. All of the projects are so impressive that it was difficult to choose. However, I narrowed down on Colombia because after the natural disaster and the recent ruling of the judges regarding the property rights in favour of the indigenous community, they need financial support to establish themselves so that they are able to support themselves in the future and become independent.
Denise Oliveira says
Ecovillage Chitubu – Zimbabwe, GEN Africa

hello, I’m sorry, I desire a good luck to all projects, as well as suggesting some ideas, but forgot to indicate my favorite project – it’s AYRUMÃ Ecovillage, because of your innovative project linking biodiversity and cultural conservation and knowledge! Ayrumã ecovillageis a pionner in Brazil and in the world in this kind of link. Indeed, the ecovillage acts in one of the most diverse and theatrened biome, the Cerrado – Brazilian savanna – protecting a large área of native vegetation, with endemic and threatened species, and fortifyng the tradicional cultural knowledge of the communities surrounding the ecovillage, in Serro, Brazil. Therefore, Ayrumã ecovillage has a deep impact and solutions to the issue of biodiversity conservation associated with science and tradicional knowledges within an area strongly affected by minning companies. So, despiste all other projects are bright and crtical, I indicate Ayrumã with its love to nature and culture.

All these projects are important in today’s reality. But my heart goes to Ayrumã Ecovillage – Brasil. What is happening there is devastating. The corruption in Brazil goes beyond imagination. A beautiful lash nature gets destroyed very quickly and it affects a lot of people, especially people of the forest, indigenous people who have hard time to protect themselves and thier land.
We need to preserve a very sacred place on earth, the energy of this region gives balance all over the planet.
Ayrumã Ecovillage – Brasil

My Personal vote goes to Ecovillage Ayrumã, in the Region of Serro, Minas Gerais, Brazilian Cerrado.
Ayrumãs Team is performing a very important role concerning the protection of the waters as of course the whole biome of our region. Both through the conscious guardianship of a considerable area, full of cristaline waters and through social media, artistic and sacred activism.
Mining Industry has indeed a huge interest in exploiting the region and the impacts of their presence, in the way it has been happening, is sadly devastating. IT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW.
For the maintainance of balance and resilience of both the natural and cultural environment of SERRO, WE NEED GLOBAL VISIBILITY NOW to sensibilize authorities on their responsibilities to serve THE PEOPLE, who is and has always been one with its natural environment.
May we all live in peace, free of the fear of being deprived from that, what is our COMMON BIRTH HERITAGE AND HOME.
Blessings to all guardians of Mother Earth.

I live in the same area of the Ayrumã Ecovillage – Brasil and heartily support the project. I recently conducted an art project with the Collectif Ethnographic about the basin of the river Capivari and the close, intimate and respectful ways the people of our Brazilian cerrado can live with the water. Our area suffers a tremendous threat from the destructive and monstrous, to use the term of anthropologist Viveiros de Castro, capitalist extractive interests. Numerous mining projects represent an orchestrated attack against this still preserved beautiful unique and vital environment
The ecovila is a fundamental part of our effort to live well with the people, the water and all living beings in this part of our planet

I believe in the Ayrumã Ecovillage as a role model for sustainable ecological development. Their mission is beyond altruistic approaches, focusing on empowering local familiar agricultural systems.
Their impact is thru several movements and connections to strength community selfsuficience.
Being located at the espinhaco region in Minas Gerais, inside Capivari region in Serro city. This location is blessed with underground mineral water and lots of
Natural rocky formations loved by the mining companies eager to explore whatever riches beneath regardless of impact on the water streams.
Their movement thru partnerships also work as influencers on the damages posed by mining explorations and on offering alternatives for locals to get some resources from agroecological productions.

Goya Castro says
I dream that the award goes to Ecovila Ayrumã.
They are doing an incredible job resisting and protecting the social and natural resources of the state
of Minas Gerais, Brazil.
As everyone knows, since 2019 we have an ongoing extreme right policy in Brazil imposed by the Bolsonaro regime. People with less income are much more socially and economically excluded. They are mostly native Brazilian Indians and Afro-descendants as well as all the natural resources where they uses live and protect.
The Ayrumã ecovillage deserves international visibility and resources to resist and protect it from the mining companies that Bolsonaro wants to free itself to exploit .
