Narara Ecovillage (NEV) is situated at Narara, close to Gosford and the main train line to Sydney, NSW, Australia. A project that started as a Dream in 1999, with People in 2004 and with Land in 2012. Currently, 100 of us are living in our homes on site and another 140 committed future residents are on their way.
We are a well-developed, diverse community that has been working together to develop this wonderful 63-hectare site with our own beautiful 45 megalitre dam and nearby Strickland Forest. We have adopted Sociocracy as our governance system, which is a distributed power model with transparency, equivalence and effectiveness as central tenants.
The community is vibrant with representative demographics and we are GEN Australia members and supporters of the UN SDGs.
Currently, we are revising our original Aim which has essentially been achieved and our next pathway will be guided by the following Aim for which there has been over 100 contributors but needs final community consent: Our Aim is to create a thriving, inspiring and inclusive inter-generational community that nurtures connection, collaboration, innovation and fun. We aim to live with kindness, aware of our interdependence with others and the natural world. We will be financially viable, and use Sociocratic governance and other regenerative approaches to foster resilience in a changing world.
We have our own water licence, and NEV Power continues to forge ahead with solar arrays, smart power system management and battery storage. We have started food production, welcome visitors monthly, serve residents and guests at our on-site Coffee Cart, have pot luck meals and social gatherings, and hold presentations, workshops and events through NEV Education and our associated Narara Eco Living Network.

We invite prospective ecovillage members to contact us by email and to attend an open day (these have been online during COVID). We have a process called Journey to Joining which enables people to come to understand the governance system of sociocracy and get to know as many aspects of the ecovillage prior to considering building.
