The Sundarbans Eco Village from Bangladesh, implemented by the Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS), exemplifies a holistic approach to environmental sustainability and community development in the disaster-prone Sundarbans coastal region of Bangladesh. The Eco Village is a model of social, cultural, environmental, and economic development by respecting indigenous know and culture that does not harm the ecosystem. This is an ecosystem-based adaptation or Local Led Adaptation (LLA); and Nature-based solutions (NbS) approach for conserving nature and reducing poverty. The Eco Village initiative encompasses green housing, green business, and green education, focusing on climate change adaptation, nature-based solutions, and sustainable livelihoods through integrated agriculture, fisheries, and forestry. The initiative’s achievements include the restoration of 150 hectares of mangrove forests, provision of renewable energy solutions to over 3,100 families, and ensuring safe drinking water for 12,000 people through solar-powered filtration systems. The project also promotes community-based ecotourism and the production and marketing of mangrove-based products, significantly enhancing local income and resilience against climatic disasters. Recognized for its impact, the Eco Village project has won numerous awards and was showcased at Expo 2020 Dubai’s Global Best Practice Program. This initiative not only improves the socio-economic conditions of the local population but also contributes to biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation, setting a model for replication across Bangladesh and beyond.

People from all over the world can join us with our initiatives (Safe Drinking Water, Renewable Energy, Fuel Efficient Cooking Stoves, Agriculture, Fisheries, Environmental Education, Mangrove Restoration, Eco-Tourism, Climate Change Adaptation, etc.) by providing technical and financial support.
This is a unique journey to discover some of the most complex environmental, social and economic problems affecting Bangladesh and BEDS has been working on to provide systemic solutions for the local population and natural ecosystem. This story of transformation is—ultimately—about a new development model able to bring together economic and social progress with natural regeneration in one of the most precious natural ecosystems of the world: the Sundarbans Mangrove Forest. A story of empowerment, collaboration, trust and social entrepreneurship to shape a resilient future in the face of climate change, poverty and natural degradation. A community-based approach to have the way for a new relation between humans and nature.
Hello! I am interested in learning about ecological projects around the world. I am part of SEN (Scandinavian ecovillage network), currently living in Finland, but soon traveling to Thailand to volunteer in an ecovillage.
I see that you accept visitors and I would like to know some more information about your projects, arranging the visit, accomodation possibilities and how to get to this area.
